Interesting Facts about Insurance Part 2

Did you know insurance can be fun and interesting to learn about?

1. Your home insurance probably covers volcano and meteor damage

You may know that your home insurance doesn’t protect you from flood damage and earthquake damage (unless a separate policy is purchased for flood & earthquake) but you may not fully appreciate all that it does protect you from. Home insurance policies usually cover damage from volcanoes and even meteors. It’s best to read your policy closely, or talk with your agent, to find out exactly what is and isn’t covered, so that you can decide whether you want to add any other coverage, such as flood insurance.

2. No insurance company will underwrite Jackie Chan’s productions.

Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, famous for his daredevil stunts, personally trains his own stuntmen and pays their medical bills out of his own pocket. “There are so many safety and insurance rules to follow,” Chan once said in an interview on his official website. “I know that they want to make sure that I’m safe when I do my stunts, but sometimes they insist that I use protective gear for even simple things, and that is frustrating. It takes so much time,” he said. Chan said he feels less encumbered when making films in Hong Kong. “In Hong Kong, we just go ahead and do what needs to be done”. This just proves that even celebrities cannot escape the restrictions of safety protocols and insurance regulations.

3. Wedding Insurance offers coverage for liability and cancelation but not for a change of heart

Liability insurance protects you from responsibility from any accidents or injuries during your ceremony or reception including alcohol-related incidents. Some venues require this and your local jurisdiction may also require Wedding Insurance for a liquor permit. Cancelation insurance reimburses you for all money spent in the event your wedding has to be called off under specific circumstance listed in the policy but does not include if the bride or groom get cold feet and decide not to go through with the marriage.

4. Body Parts can be insured

At the height of his career, soccer legend David Beckham insured his legs for $151,000,000.
Famous movie director Steven Spielberg has the most expensive life insurance policy in the world at $1.2 billion.
Actress Julia Roberts insured her smile for $30,000,000.
Singer Tom Jones had a $7,000,000 insurance policy on his chest hair.

5. Falling Coconuts

A Hawaiian police officer was awarded $39,000 in damages when a coconut fell from a tree and hit him on the head when he was on duty. Coconuts can be dangerous as it is reported that there are 150 people killed each year from falling coconuts.

6. Congratulations you are having twins!

If you happen to receive the happy news that you or your partner, conceived more than the one baby as planned, there is an insurance policy for that. It’s called Multiple Birth Insurance, and it covers the financial impact of more than one baby. One couple collected after having twins, purchased the insurance again and ended up having another set of twins. In the United States, 4% of live births produce more than one baby.
